The Westwood Dome over Walker Lake

Yep it was a joke. We swear. Nobody was ever really going to build a dome over Westwood.

Our story was posted on April Fool’s Day and within hours of publishing it we received inquiries from alarmed Westwood residents, Sacramento media outlets and lots of folks who thought that building a dome over Westwood was a bad idea. We couldn’t agree more. But it was funny!

You can read our story here and our Westwood Dome faux website is here.

John Choo: A Lifetime of Good Deeds and Kind Acts Thursday, April 19th, 2012

SusanvilleStuff celebrated National Volunteer week with one of our most popular stories of the year; Melissa Blosser’s feature on local volunteer John Choo.

“If someone has a need, John will do anything to fulfill it,” said Juanita Williams, coordinator for the Lassen County Salvation Army. “He is always thinking about other people,” she said.

John Choo: A true Susanville standout

Choo has been a part of the Salvation Army since 1978 working in the thrift shop on Gay Street, and when it closed Choo stayed on to help with the food distribution. At one point the Salvation Army struggled to stay open, but Choo along with five others fought to keep it going.

“A lot of times we say things to people we don’t mean or we harm them, many of those people might be gone and you don’t have the chance to say you are sorry, but you can do something good in their name,” said Choo. “I know I get paid ten times back for the things I do, and for that I am grateful,” he said.

NASA Confirms Early Morning Meteor Explosion Over Susanville – Monday, April 23rd, 2012

NASA experts at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed that the spectacular fireball witnessed by Susanville residents as it passed overhead was, in fact, an exploding meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Local Rancher Jeff Hemphill spotted the fireball as he was driving on Highway 139 above the college and described it as, “A greenish streak of light crossing from the northeast to the southwest.”

Hemphill’s description was shared by several of the lucky few who saw the fireball Sunday morning. Stacy Wilson was just leaving the grocery store when she noticed the meteor crossing over the Honey Lake Valley, “It was incredible, I thought maybe I was seeing things.” she said.
