The Almanor Ranger District of Lassen National Forest is giving away free seedlings to the public on Friday and Saturday, July 10th and 11th, from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. at the Almanor Ranger District on Highway 36 East in Chester. The seedlings are left over from a Forest Service spring tree planting.
Three hundred conifer seedlings are available, including 70 Jeffrey pine, 70 ponderosa pine, 70 incense cedar, 10 sugar pine, 10 western white pine, and 70 Douglas fir. Quantities are limited to 20 seedlings per household and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Forest Service asks people to bring their own containers in which to carry the trees.
“Cardboard boxes work best for insulating tree roots from heat,” said Almanor Assistant Culturist David Oliver. “A 12-inch wide box is a good size for transporting 20 seedlings.”
