On a sunny autumn Saturday at the end of October members of the Backcountry Horsemen gathered at the Cone Lake trailhead to rebuild damaged corrals.
Eight hard-working members of the High Country Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen travelled from Greenville, Susanville and Milford to work on the project. They spent the day planting posts and bolting rails in place on two new corrals to replace ones that had been damaged from last winter’s snow load.
“Cone Lake is the first of three corrals they will be rebuilding.” said Janie Ackley, the Almanor Ranger District’s Resource Officer. “The others are at the Caribou Lake and Hay Meadows trailheads. That work will be completed in 2018.”
The Backcountry Horsemen are a national non-profit organization dedicated to keeping trails maintained for hikers, bikers and horseback riders on public lands. The High Country Unit is based out of Susanville, California.
Multiple units of the Backcountry Horsemen perform annual maintenance on trails across the Lassen National Forest. The High Country Unit performs annual trail maintenance in the Caribou Wilderness, among other places on the Plumas and Modoc National Forests.
