Banner Lassen Medical Center has relaunched its popular sleep study program following successful accreditation recently by the American Commission for Health Care.
The comprehensive survey, which included one full-day plus an evening with the sleep technician and a patient, determined that Banner Lassen’s sleep study program successfully met every standard and demonstrated a high level of performance and patient care. The accreditation will remain in place through Sept. 11, 2020.
“Sleep disorders, specifically sleep apnea, represent an underdiagnosed and undertreated epidemic that our community is experiencing,” said Dr. Kline, internal medicine physician and certified sleep specialist at Banner Lassen. “By increasing awareness and providing these services, not only are we are improving individuals’ health, wellness and quality of life but the community as a whole by keeping the roads safe.”
According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder, with a majority of people not knowing they have one or how to get treatment. The sleep study aims to improve that statistic by increasing awareness and providing resources and treatments.
The sleep study program evaluates and diagnoses sleep disorders and offers overnight sleep studies in its lab for the following conditions: breathing, excessive sleepiness, general fatigue, movement disorders, parasomnias, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, snoring and other sleep or wake schedule problems. Signs that you may have a sleep disorder include:
• Snoring loudly
• Tiredness, fatigue, sleepy frequently during the daytime
• Observed breathing pauses, choking or gasping during sleep
• High blood pressure
During the sleep test, patients will spend the night in the BLMC sleep study room monitored by a respiratory care practitioner. A sleep specialist analyzes information about the patient’s sleep to tell them if they need additional treatment. Sleep medicine services are covered by most insurance plans. Patients are encouraged to talk to their primary care physician to see if they should be tested.
