After winning the California District 48 Little League Championship, Susanville’s 8-10 all Star team competed for the California Section 2 title. The tournament was hosted by Susanville and was held July 16th thru 20th.
In their first game Susanville faced off against Chico East on July 17th. Reece Chappius started on the mound for Susanville going 1.2 innings. He gave up 4 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs and recorded 1 k. Sutter Moss followed Chappius on the mound pitching 1.1 innings. Moss had 1 walk and 1 k and didn’t give up any runs. Matthew Battey closed out the game on the mound pitching 2 innings. Battey gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, no walks, and had 2 k’s. At the plate for Susanville the team scored 21 runs on 19 hits. Nash Osborn went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, Tyler Zahniser 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, Sutter Moss 4 for 4 with a homerun and 4 RBI, Reece Chappius 4 for 5 with 2 RBI, Seth Mallery 3 for 5 with 6 RBI, Tucker Schall 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, James Lynn 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Connor Wolcott 1 for 1, and Jarin Wheeler went 1 for 2. Susanville came out on top of Chico East 21-11.
On July 18th Susanville faced Peach Bowl Little League out of the Yuba City area. Seth Mallery started on the mound for Susanville and pitched 3.1 innings. Mallery gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk and had 2 k’s. Sutter Moss came in to pitch in the 4th inning and pitched 1 inning in relief. Moss only gave up 1 hit, 1 run and 1 walk and struck out 2 batters. Connor Wolcott came in to finish the game on the mound. Wolcott threw 1.2 innings. He gave up 4 hits, 4 runs, and 1 walk. The offense for Susanville put 13 runs on the board on 15 hits. Osborn went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Zahinser 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Moss 2 for 4 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI, Chappius 2 for 4, Mallery 2 for 2, Tucker Schall 2 for 2, Lynn 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Wheeler 1 for 2 with 1 RBI. Susanville beat Peach Bowl 13-10 to earn their spot in the Section 2 championship game.
Susanville squared off against Redwood Empire Little League in the Championship game on July 20th. Sutter Moss started on the mound for Susanville going 3 innings. Moss gave up 10 runs, 10 hits, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, and had 5 k’s. Matthew Battey came in to relieve Moss and pitched 3 solid innings only giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, and had 2 k’s. Sutter Moss led Susanville at the plate going 4 for 4 with a homerun and 3 RBI, followed by Osborn 1 for 4, Chappius 2 for 4, Mallery 3 for 4 with 1 RBI, Schall 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, Lynn 2 for 3 with a homerun and 4 RBI, Connor Wolcott 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Wheeler 1 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Jack Wright 1 RBI. Susanville scored 21 runs on 14 hits to defeat Redwood Empire 21-12 to earn the Section 2 title for the first time in Susanville Little League history!
The boys didn’t have much time to celebrate before they headed to the State tournament in Larkspur on Friday July, 22nd. The opening ceremonies for the North State tournament were held at Joe Wagner field at 8AM Saturday the 23rd in Larkspur, CA, just north of San Francisco. Susanville would play against Lemoore in the first game of the tournament at 10AM. Against Lemoore, Reece Chappius, Seth Mallery, Jarin Wheeler, and Tucker Schall would all pitch. Chappius went 3 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 hit batter, 4 runs and had 4 k’s. Mallery came in and pitched .2 innings with 4 hits, and 5 runs. Jarin Wheeler followed on the mound going 2 innings giving up 7 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk, and had 1 k. Tucker Schall came into to finish the game throwing .1 innings and giving up 1 hit. Offensively Osborn went 1 for 4, Zahniser 1 for 3, Moss 1 for 3 with 2 RBI, Mallery 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Schall 1 for 2 with 1 RBI. Despite their best efforts Susanville was outsized and outmatched and fell to Lemoore 17-5. This put Susanville into the losers bracket where they would end up facing Pacifica American Little League on July 25th.
In game two of the State Tournament Susanville was again outmatched by their opponent. Sutter Moss, Connor Wolcott, James Lynn and Seth Mallery all pitched for Susanville. Moss went 2.1 innings giving up 12 hits and 13 runs. Connor Wolcott followed throwing 2.2 innings giving up 7 hits, and 5 runs. James Lynn came in6th inning to pitch giving up 2 hits, 3 runs, and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Mallery came in to close out the game on the mound. He gave up 1 hit, 1 walk and 3 runs crossed the plate before the inning closed out. At the plate Zahniser went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Chappius 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, Moss 2 for 4, Osborn 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Mallery 1 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Beck Williams went 1 for 4. Susanville lost to Pacifica American 24-9 and were eliminated from the tournament.
