With snow on the ground, and more in the forecast, Chief of Police Tom Downing is reminding Susanville residents to be ready for winter snow removal.
“The City of Susanville,” explains Downing, “has an ordinance that becomes effective whenever there is three inches of snow or ice on any part of the roadways in the city.”
When the ice and snow accumulate on the roads no vehicles are allowed to be parked or left unattended on any city street. Vehicles that impede snow removal may be towed immediately at the owner’s expense.
“Also, in accordance with the California Vehicle Code,” said Downing, “any time a vehicle is left standing on any public street or alley for more than 72 consecutive hours, that vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense.”
It’s not just cars and trucks that are a problem for snowplows and snow removal in town. Travel and utility trailers, boats and recreational vehicles, even portable basketball hoops all need to be moved away from the road and sidewalk.
The police department recommends that you store your RV during the winter months.
Private property owners concerned about abandoned vehicles on their own property may tow vehicles in accordance with the guidelines outlined in Section 22658 of the California Vehicle Code. An explanation of this section for property owners is available at the Susanville Police Department.
