Biz Buzz: Local Business News for September 18th

By Marshel Couso

Welcome to our weekly feature dedicated to covering Susanville and Lassen County’s business scene! Grand openings, new employees, renovations, new hours… each week we’ll keep you up to date with important information about the businesses you rely on.

The Grand Cafe

The Grand Cafe in uptown Susanville is undergoing some amazing renovations at the moment, modernizing the century old restaurant while working to retain the character of a Susanville landmark.

“We are making steady progress,” explains Grand Cafe owner Judith Lowry. “We are super proud of the level of quality Monath Construction is putting into this beloved old building.”

Work on the cafe includes restoring the Grand Cafe neon sign, an iconic part of the historic uptown landscape.

“Gas and glass neon is classic,” Lowry says, “so rather than switch to an LED sign we thought we would give the old neon a new life.”

Other renovations have included a new hood for the main kitchen, air conditioning and lights in the Grand’s dining room.

Giving the Grand a new life is a homegrown labor of love, and it shows in every square inch of the remodel.

“After the windows and ducting go in, the sheet rock will go up. Then comes the pretty stuff. That should be fun!”

Fair Winds Reiki & Mindfulness

Empower yourself with a gentle, powerful skill that supports wellness – for you and your loved ones.

“Join us for an afternoon exploring Traditional Usui Reiki, a Japanese healing practice that nurtures the whole self: body, mind, and spirit,” says Fair Winds Reiki and Mindfulness Owner Laureen Jordan. “Reiki is known to ease stress, calm the nervous system, and encourage deep rest and healing.”

In this hands-on class, you’ll receive your Reiki Level I attunement, explore its history and modern-day uses, and gain practical experience in using Reiki for self-care and to support others. By the end of the day, according to Jordan, you’ll be able to share Reiki energy with intention, compassion and confidence.

The cost for this course is $165 if booked in advance online. Register online by September 19th. Space is limited to five students.

“I share Reiki because I’ve seen it transform lives, including my own! Learning Reiki has given me wisdom and tools for calming my nervous system and comforting others during challenging times. Through Fair Winds, I’m able to offer a safe, inclusive space to explore this beautiful Japanese healing art together.”

Thompson Peak Lavender

Thompson Peak Lavender is opening its fields for a special event this Saturday, September 20th, to raise money for a local child named Ayden who is battling cancer. The “Lavender for Love: Standing with Ayden” fundraiser will run from 8:00a.m. to 7:00p.m.

“Last week, when we hosted the Richmond Garden Club, one common theme came up again and again: “Can we cut a lot and sell it for Ayden?” explained Thompson Peak Lavender owner Celeste Wieser on Facebook. “Their love and care for their classmate was so moving, it inspired us to open our field and do the same.”

This Saturday 100% of the proceeds from these cuttings and product will go directly to Ayden and his family as they navigate the challenges of stage 4 cancer.

“Community is powerful, and together we can lift this family up with love and support.”

The community is invited to visit the lavender rows, breathe in the fresh air and show their support. The farm is located at 465-000 Blevins Lane in Janesville.
