The Bureau of Land Management in partnership with Lassen Rural Bus is offering outdoor enthusiasts the chance to celebrate National Trails Day, this Saturday, June 7th, with a shuttle-assisted outing on the Bizz Johson National Recreation Trail.
The shuttle allows bicyclists, walkers and runners to enjoy an outing on the trail without having to arrange their own vehicle shuttles.
Participants should meet at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road in Susanville, at 8:15a.m. The bus and bike shuttle will depart promptly at 8:30. Bus fares vary, and bike shuttle fees are $3. Exact change is appreciated.
The shuttle will drop riders at Devilās Corral Trailhead, Fredonyer Summit, and the Mason Station Trailhead. Riders can then take the trail back to Susanville in outings of 7, 18 and 30 miles.
About 2.5 miles east of Devilās Corral, participants must detour to the Southside Trail because of a rockslide and temporary closure on the Bizz Johnson Trail. Riders must use the east tunnel bypass trail to reach the Southside Trail connector. The connection is well signed.
It is a narrow single track, and some users prefer walking their bikes on steep sections.
A trail map, available online, shows Southside Trail connections to the Bizz Johnson Trail. Brochures and maps are also available at the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, 2550 Riverside Drive, Susanville.
