BLM Announces Temporary Closure on Section of Bizz Johnson Trail

The Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close a two-mile section of the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, to protect public safety while crews remove trees that were damaged in the Hog Fire of 2020.

The access restriction is expected to begin Monday, October 31st and continue until November 26th.

The temporary closure will extend from the Devil’s Corral trestle about two miles west to the Lassen National Forest boundary. Through trips from Westwood to Susanville will not be possible during this time.

“We understand that this will cause inconvenience for some trail users, but it is critical that we protect public safety by removing these hazard trees,” said Emily Ryan, manager of the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville.

“Other areas of the trail, including the seven-mile section through the Susan River Canyon between Susanville and Devil’s Corral, will not be impacted.”

The Hog Fire burned more than 9,000 acres in July 2020, spreading to the popular recreation trail from its starting point on Hog Mountain west of Susanville. The BLM and Forest Service have already repaired other fire damage, including burned small bridges and culverts.

More information on the upcoming project is available by contacting the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, 1.530.257.0456.
