New plastic bag dispensers and containers for dog waste have been placed at Susanville area trailheads on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail in an effort to improve scenic beauty and sanitation.
“We are encouraging people who walk their dogs on this beautiful recreational trail to bring plastic bags from home or to use the plastic bags from the dispenser boxes to pick up after their pets and dispose of their waste at trailhead containers” said Amy Holmen of the Lassen Land and Trails Trust. “If we all pitch in we can maintain and improve the beauty of this trail that we love so much.”
The new containers and dispensers are at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot, Richmond Road (caboose), Miller Road and Hobo Camp trailheads. Holmen asked that people bring excess plastic grocery bags on their trail outings to help keep the dispensers stocked.
“It is an excellent way to reuse these bags,” she said, “and if we all work to keep the boxes full, it will easier for all users to help keep the trail clean.”
In addition to removing the unsightliness of dog waste, proper disposal is important for public health and natural resource reasons.
Pet waste contains bacteria and parasites that can spread diseases to pets and humans. Additionally, pet waste contributes to water pollution. It is one pollution source that can be controlled by thoughtful pet owners.
