Recent rains and a shift to cooler temperatures have reduced dry conditions and fire dangers in northeast California’s high desert areas, and the Bureau of Land Management has lifted fire restrictions on public lands managed by the Alturas, Eagle Lake and Surprise field offices effective Friday, October 3rd.
With restrictions are eased, campfires can again be used outside of developed campgrounds. Fire permits are required. Restrictions on smoking and use of internal combustion engines off of roads and trails are also lifted. Use of chainsaws after 1:00p.m. is again allowed.
The ban on outdoor burning will remain in effect until rescinded by CAL FIRE.
Even with reduced fire dangers, officials urge outdoor enthusiasts and homeowners to be careful with fire. Campers must fully extinguish campfires when leaving camp, leaving them cold to the touch. Wood cutters must have spark arresters on their chainsaws, and they should carry tools including shovels and fire extinguishers.
