BLM Planning Prescribed Burns North of Susanville

Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management plan to burn brush and limb piles on public lands east of Eagle Lake beginning this week and continuing through the fall and winter. Piles will be burned only on days when weather allows for safe and successful burning and smoke management.

The Horse Hopper Project is on high desert land about 20 miles north of Susanville and about 15 miles east of Eagle Lake. Smoke may be visible from the Horse Lake Road, Highway 139 and the Stones-Bengard community.

The piles resulted from juniper thinning projects designed to reduce wildfire risk and improve sage-steppe habitat that benefits sage-grouse and other wildlife.

More information is available from the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, (530) 257-0456.
