Blue Line Fly Fishing will host a pair of comprehensive, two-day Stillwater Fly Fishing Clinics in Susanville this fall, offering anglers of all experience levels hands-on instruction both in the classroom and on the water. The first of two, weekend-sessions is scheduled for October 24th and 25th and the second on November 7th and 8th.
Day 1: Classroom & Casting Foundation
The first day runs from 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. and begins in a classroom setting. Instructors will walk participants through the core fundamentals of stillwater fishing, starting with essential equipment like rods, lines, reels, wading gear, and accessories.
You’ll dive into aquatic entomology, knot tying, leader construction, rod rigging, and watercraft setup. The classroom portion also covers critical techniques like setting hooks, landing and releasing fish responsibly, and targeting regional bass, trout, and panfish.
After lunch, the afternoon will be spent on the lawn developing and refining your casting skills.
Day 2: On-the-Water at Eagle Lake
Day two shifts to Eagle Lake from 7:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. for a full morning of practical experience. Participants will put their new skills to work right on the water, practicing overhead and roll casts, indicator fishing with a variety of fly patterns, and streamer fishing using different lines.
Clinic Details & How to Register
All necessary fishing gear—including rods, reels, lines, and flies—is provided, along with morning coffee on day one. If you prefer to fish with your own equipment, a 9–10 foot rod in a 5 to 7 weight is ideal. Participants should bring their own food and drinks, chest or hip waders, and dress warmly in layers. Bringing along gloves and hand or toe warmers is strongly encouraged.
