The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has officially opened the application window for $10 million in grant funding aimed at strengthening the state’s forestry sector.
This initiative is designed to support business and workforce development projects that foster healthy, resilient forests while simultaneously boosting local economies through sustainable industry growth.
For regions like Lassen County, where timber and forest management are foundational to the community, these funds offer a significant opportunity to modernize wood-processing infrastructure and develop a highly skilled workforce. This grant cycle specifically encourages private investment in clean technologies and innovative wood-processing solutions that help the state meet its climate goals.
Cultivating a Resilient Forest Economy
The program aims to diversify California’s wood products industry by supporting long-term, sustainable management of the state’s natural resources. By integrating innovative wood use with forest health initiatives, the state hopes to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating stable, professional career pathways. These projects are designed to complement a suite of state-wide environmental strategies, including the California Wildfire & Forest Resilience Action Plan and the Strategic Plan for Expanding the Use of Beneficial Fire.
A Track Record of Investment
Since 2022, CAL FIRE’s Business and Workforce Development program has awarded more than $105 million to over 105 projects across the state. These grants are part of California Climate Investments, a program that utilizes “Cap-and-Invest” dollars to fund projects that protect public health and the environment. This funding model focuses heavily on strengthening local economies and supporting natural environments in areas most impacted by pollution and limited resource access.
