Cal-FIRE Announces Planned Prescribed Burn Near Westwood and Clear Creek

Residents near Westwood and Clear Creek are advised that Cal-FIRE will be conducting a prescribed burn operation, the Mooney Prescribed Burn, beginning today, October 8th.

The low-intensity timber understory burn is a crucial part of an ongoing Cal-FIRE Fuel Break project and is being executed in coordination with Collins Pine Almanor Forest. This project is aimed at reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the area.

Project Details and Duration
The primary goal of the Mooney Prescribed Burn is two-fold: Reduce roadside vegetation fires, targeting fuels that could ignite roadside fires and to protect communities.

The project links with additional Cal-FIRE Fuel Breaks to enhance protection for the communities of Westwood and Clear Creek from future wildland fires.

Cal-FIRE anticipates that this ongoing fuel break project, including the prescribed burning activities, may continue through the months of October and November, dependent on favorable conditions for a safe, low-intensity burn.

Visibility and Safety
The public should be aware that smoke will be visible in several areas: Near the communities of Westwood and Clear Creek and along Highway 36 between Westwood and Highway 147.

Important Safety Notice: Prescribed burn signs will be posted along roadways to alert travelers. There will be no need to call 911 to report the burning operations. These are planned, controlled events managed by fire personnel.
