Cal Fire Lassen-Modoc Unit Begins Prescribed Pile Burning Near Clear Creek

The CAL FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit began pile burning operations Tuesday morning just west of the Clear Creek community, part of a week-long project aimed at reducing hazardous fuel loads along the Highway 147 corridor.

The project, titled the Clear Creek Rx Pile Burning, is situated north of Highway 147. Residents and travelers in the area have likely noticed smoke and flames over the last 24 hours, but fire officials emphasize that these are planned burns and there is no need to report them.

According to CAL FIRE Captain Robbie Whitchurch, the operations are expected to continue throughout the remainder of the week, provided weather conditions and fuel moisture levels remain favorable to meet safety and fuel reduction objectives.

The primary goal of the prescribed burn is to remove flammable fuel accumulations that have built up in the area. By proactively managing these fuels, fire crews aim to create a buffer that reduces the potential intensity of future wildfires, providing better protection for the surrounding communities of Westwood, Clear Creek and the Almanor Basin.
