Cal-FIRE LMU Welcomes New Apparatus Engineer Amid Prescribed Burn Efforts

The Cal-FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit has a new addition to its team, welcoming Fire Apparatus Engineer Gabe Fergoso. Fergoso recently graduated from the Cal-FIRE Academy in Redding and is now officially part of the local unit.

The announcement comes as the Lassen-Modoc Unit completed a significant prescribed burn in the Honey Lake Wildlife Area’s Dakin Unit. The planned burn, which produced visible smoke in the valley at the end of last week, was a collaborative effort aimed at improving local wildlife habitat.

Before the burn began, Lassen-Modoc Unit personnel led a briefing to go over the operational plan and safety protocols. Officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife were also on hand to explain the ecological benefits of the project.

The burn is a crucial step in preparing the soil by returning essential nutrients, which will support next year’s planting efforts. The new vegetation will create vital nesting areas for birds and provide habitat for other wildlife.

This week’s activities highlight the dual focus of Cal-FIRE, which not only responds to emergencies but also proactively manages landscapes to protect and enhance natural ecosystems.
