With the Labor Day holiday weekend approaching and an increase in recreational travel expected, the Cal-FIRE’s Lassen-Modoc Unit is reminding drivers about the importance of vehicle and trailer safety to prevent wildfires. The agency emphasizes that it only takes one spark to start a fire.
Before hitting the road, drivers towing trailers are urged to take a few minutes to perform a safety pre-check. According to the Cal-FIRE reminder, these simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of a roadside fire:
Tires: Ensure both your vehicle and trailer tires are in good condition and properly inflated.
Safety Chains: Confirm that all safety chains are securely fastened and not dragging on the pavement, which can cause dangerous sparks.
Trailer Condition: Check that your trailer is roadworthy and not overloaded before you begin your trip.
Ramps: If your trailer has ramps, make sure they are properly secured in their traveling position.
Tire Blowouts: Check your mirrors frequently to catch any flat or blown tires early, as this can lead to further vehicle damage and fire risk.
Avoid Tall Grass: Never drive or park in tall, dry grass. The hot exhaust or undercarriage parts of a vehicle can easily ignite the vegetation.
Periodic Checks: On long trips, stop periodically to inspect your vehicle and trailer to ensure everything remains secure and in good working order.
Cal-FIRE urges the public to do their part in helping to keep the community safe as fire danger remains high across the region.
