The CAL FIRE Ione Training Center celebrated a major operational milestone recently with a dual graduation ceremony, honoring new field leadership and specialized machinery operators ready to deploy across California.
The joint ceremonies marked the graduation of 39 members from Company Officer Academy Class 26-05 and 13 graduates from Heavy Fire Equipment Operator Class 26-01.
According to CAL FIRE officials, the dual cohort represents a significant achievement in bolstering both the department’s strategic battlefield leadership and its heavy tactical response capabilities.
Expanding the Leadership Pipeline
The 39 new company officers graduating from Class 26-05 arrive as part of a major, multi-year expansion of CAL FIRE’s training program infrastructure.
Back in 2019, the department’s leadership development pipeline relied almost entirely on two primary facilities in Ione and Riverside. At that time, the Ione facility hosted all six of the state’s annual Company Officer Academies.
With backing from the Governor’s Office, CAL FIRE has since doubled its training footprint. The agency now operates four fully functional training hubs across California:
- Ione Training Center
- Riverside Training Center
- Redding Training Center
- Atwater Training Center
This expanded regional network has drastically increased the department’s throughput. Annual academies have grown from six in 2019 to a planned 15 sessions in 2026.
Since the expansion began, the program has successfully trained and graduated more than 3,300 Company Officers to lead crews on the fire line.
Heavy Equipment Operators Take the Field
Following the officer leadership ceremony, the facility recognized the 13 specialized personnel of HFEO Class 26-01.
These operators completed a rigorous technical curriculum focused on the precise operation of heavy motorized equipment. Their roles are vital to wildland fire control, forest protection efforts, and state conservation projects.
Beyond learning how to maneuver the massive machinery in volatile environments, these graduates trained extensively in the complex mechanical maintenance and repair of the equipment, ensuring high operational readiness during emergency deployments.
Continuous High-Tempo Operations
While all four regional campuses conduct active Firefighter Academies to maintain baseline statewide staffing, the Ione Training Center remains the state’s comprehensive instructional hub. It uniquely hosts the Firefighter Academy, the Company Officer Academy, Heavy Fire Equipment Operator training, and the Regular Basic Course.
On a daily basis, these campuses operate at a high tempo. Hundreds of personnel rotate through intense physical conditioning drills, practice high-pressure hose deployments, and utilize immersive simulators to master incident command systems and fire behavior under controlled conditions.
With the graduation of these two latest classes, the new company officers and heavy equipment operators will now return to their respective regional units statewide, fully equipped to execute CAL FIRE’s comprehensive “All-Risk” emergency response mission.
