The California Fire Safe Council is applauding the passage of Senate Bill 973 out of the California State Senate, calling the legislative milestone “an important step forward for wildfire resilience efforts across California.”
The bill now moves to the California State Assembly, where it has been officially referred to both the Assembly Natural Resources and the Emergency Management Committees.
If passed into law, the legislation would codify and expand the Wildfire County Coordinator Program. Established in 2021, the program is a proven partnership between CAL FIRE and the CFSC designed to support local coordination, mitigation planning, funding access and community wildfire resilience efforts statewide.
Through this program, Wildfire County Coordinators work closely with local jurisdictions across California to strengthen collaboration, support hands-on mitigation efforts, connect partners with necessary resources, and empower communities to take direct action in reducing wildfire risk.
To date, the program has successfully helped secure more than $104 million for local wildfire mitigation and preparedness efforts statewide.
In tandem with the bill’s legislative progress, the CFSC has launched a new SB 973 webpage. The page features up-to-date legislative trackers, resources, and detailed insights into the statewide impact of the Wildfire County Coordinator Program.
