Carroll Street Grass Fire Underscores Extremely Dry Fire Conditions

There were some anxious moments for area residents Sunday evening as a grass fire burned up the side of the hill and briefly threatened homes on Carroll and South Gay Streets.

At around 8:15p.m., units from the Susanville Fire Department responded to 370 Carroll Street for a reported grass fire behind the house with a possible threat to structures.

“Upon arrival, Susanville Truck One observed a 30-foot by 80-foot fire with a slow rate of spread,” details SFD Captain Andrew Jarrett.

“Truck One pulled a progressive hose line and knocked down the forward progression of the fire. CalFire E-2261 scratched a handline around the perimeter of the fire. Susanville E-628 established a water supply and took over pumping operations. CalFire E-2261 and Susanville S-651 helped with the complete extinguishment and total mop-up of the fire.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the fire department began the investigation by collecting photos and talking with fire personnel and neighbors who may have seen the fire start.

“During the incident, Chief 600 responded to an additional smoke check in the area of Richmond Road, resulting in a resident burning in a burn barrel, who then extinguished it as burning in barrels is illegal in California.”

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries. SFD was supported by CalFire, Susanville Police Department and the Susanville Public Works Department.
