The Lassen National Forest will be ‘Celebrating Wildflowers’ the week of May 20th through May 24th to highlight the late spring bloom before it vanishes in the heat of summer. Throughout the week, the Forest will promote the importance of native plant conservation, with an emphasis on the biological, aesthetic and economic value of these plants.
“Due to an unseasonably warm spring, the window to enjoy our local wildflowers will be brief this year,” said Kirsten Bovee, Assistant Forest Botanist.
Bovee will lead a Wildflower Walk at Susanville Ranch Park on Monday, May 20th, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. The walk is designed to introduce participants to riparian, juniper-sagebrush, and pine-oak plant communities, each of which hosts a unique suite of wildflower species, said Bovee.
The walk will begin at the kiosk by the main parking area along Lakewood Way. It will include hiking approximately a mile and a half across somewhat uneven terrain so participants should have appropriate footwear.
Displays depicting a variety of wildflowers common to our area will also be available to the public during the week, Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at these Forest locations:

Along with the displays, a variety of free materials will be offered, including wildflower posters, magnets, frisbees, and guides to some of the local wildflower viewing spots.
