Chief Downing Reminds Residents to be Aware When Solicitors Knock

Susanville Chief of Police Tom Downing is issuing a warning to unlicensed solicitors working with the city limits, and reminding residents to be aware when individuals knock on their door selling goods or services.

According to Chief Downing there have recently been several solicitors in our community, going door to door, attempting to sell their products.

The City of Susanville’s municipal code regulates solicitors in the city limits. All solicitors are required to obtain a city business license, submit to a criminal history check, and receive the approval of the Chief of Police, prior to being issued a solicitors permit.

All Solicitors are required to carry their permit with them while conducting their business.

What do you do if approached by a solicitor? Ask them for their permit authorizing them to conduct business in the city limits. If they do not have a permit on their person or refuse to supply you that information, please contact the Susanville Police Department’s 24-hour dispatch number at 530.257.2171 and request to speak with an officer about the incident.

“Today, I was told that a certain home alarm company has been using my name as a customer reference,” explains Chief Downing, “The use of my name as a customer reference has not been authorized by me, nor have I entered into any business relationships with this company.”

“Please use caution before entering into a business relationship with any individual who comes to your door using high-pressure sales tactics.”
