CHP Incident Report: Four Injured in Highway 395 Head-On Collision

The Susanville Area office of the California Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic collision that occurred on Highway 395 just south of Sunnyside Road Wednesday night and sent four people to the hospital with moderate to major injuries.

According to CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn, 53-year old Reno resident Dean Rogers was driving southbound on US Highway 395 south of Sunnyside Road at about 8:20p.m., when he attempted to pass several slower moving vehicles by driving left of double parallel yellow lines. At this location distant view is obstructed by a curve in the road.

At the same time 66-year old Susanville resident Leslie Baker, who was driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and his passenger, 68-year old Suzanne Baker, were traveling northbound on US Highway 395 south of Rogers’ location.

Both drivers saw each other and attempted to avoid colliding by moving toward the east shoulder of the highway where their vehicles struck head-on causing major injuries to Baker and his passenger.

Just moments later 31-year old Reno resident David Crowther, who was traveling northbound on the highway, observed the collision and attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid colliding with the other vehicles. Crowther, who was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, sustained major injuries.

Rogers declined medical attention and was released at the scene.

Leslie Baker was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Suzanne Baker and David Crowther were transported to Renown Medical Center.

This collision is currently under investigation by the Susanville Area of the California Highway Patrol.

The California Highway Patrol reminds motorists to slow down, never drink impaired and always wear your seatbelt.
