CHP Incident: Susanville Resident Sustains Fatal Injuries in 395 Collision

The Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol has released details surrounding a Tuesday evening collision on Highway 395 near Janesville that killed a Susanville woman and sent the driver of her vehicle to Banner Lassen with moderate injuries.

According to the CHP’s report 64-year old Janesville resident Freddie Sanchez was driving a 2013 Dodge Ram eastbound on Sears Road shortly after 3:00p.m., and had stopped at the intersection with Highway 395.

At the same time a 2006 Honda Civic, driven by 68-year old Susanville resident Charles Miles, was traveling northbound on 395, south of the intersection with Sears Road, at approximately 65 mph.

Sanchez accelerated from the intersection in an attempt to cross the highway, and in doing so crossed directly into the path of Miles’ vehicle.

Miles, in an attempt to avoid a collision, quickly applied the brakes, but as Sanchez traveled across the northbound lane of US 395, the front of the Honda Civic struck the passenger side of the Dodge Ram. The force of the impact caused the Honda to rotate in a clockwise direction before coming to rest facing in a southeasterly direction within the intersection of US 395 and Sears Road.

The impact caused the Dodge Ram to veer sharply to the left, off of the paved portion of roadway, before coming to rest facing in a northeasterly direction on the dirt shoulder.

As a result of this collision, the passenger in the Honda, identified by the CHP as 91-year old Zellamae Miles sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram was uninjured in the collision.
