Colorado Man Dies of Injuries After CHP Pursuit and Collision

A 65-year old Pueblo, Colorado, man died of injuries he sustained after leading a CHP unit on a high-speed pursuit over Fredonyer summit on Highway 36 between Susanville and Westwood Saturday evening. The pursuit came to an end when the driver lost control on a curve, colliding with several trees near the Caltrans sand hut at the bottom of the hill.

According to details released today by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, the Colorado man, whose name has not been released, was reported to CHP as driving in a reckless manner in the area of Fredonyer summit.

“Officers responded and located the vehicle traveling westbound on Hwy 36,” explained CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn. “When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled westbound at a high rate of speed.”

As he attempted to negotiate a curve, the driver lost control and the 2015 Chrysler left the roadway, collided with several trees, and overturned. The vehicle sustained major damage and the driver was trapped inside.

“Officers and passersby pulled the injured driver from the vehicle,” said Officer Wilburn. “Life saving efforts were unsuccessful and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

CHP’s Northern Division Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the collision. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of kin.
