Jensen Hall was a very colorful place during this year’s Lassen County Fair thanks to a group of local quilting enthusiasts who spent the week creating art for a good cause – and along the way helped to promote and teach the art of quilting to fair visitors.
During the course of the fair quilters spent time making quilts and pillowcases for the ConKerr Cancer organization, joining thousands of other ConKerr Cancer volunteers in over 120 cities who dedicate themselves to brightening sick children’s lives through the simple act of sewing a bright, cheery pillowcase.
ConKerr Cancer has delivered more than 990,000 pillowcases in just seven years to 250 hospitals throughout the country, creating ‘miles of pillowcase smiles’ for the children and their parents. In addition, ConKerr volunteers visit hospitals to sew with the children, breaking up the monotony of long, frightening hospital stays.
Lassen County has an active quilters’ scene with quilting workshops tied into events like the Susanville Bluegrass Festival and the Lassen County Fair.
