The smell of a gas odor at Diamond View School Thursday morning prompted school officials to evacuate the students while Susanville’s City Fire and Public Works Departments cleared the buildings and made sure everything was ok for the students and staff to return.
Ultimately it was determined that there was no gas leak, but students feeling unwell from the odor were encouraged by the school to contact their parents.
Public Works crews, along with City Fire, responded to the smell of gas call shortly before 9:00a.m., and all safety protocols were followed by school staff while crews investigated the call.
“At 9:50a.m., crews completed their investigation of the heating system and supply line for the school and found no leaks,” explains Susanville Public Works Director Bob Godman.
“It was determined that the heating system was operating normally, however an inversion layer can sometimes cause odors to be pushed down to ground level.”
The Public Works Department thanked Diamond View School for the quick call and for quickly getting all students and staff to safety.
“At this point Diamond View School is safe to occupy. As always, the Public Works Department encourages you to move to a safe place and call 911 if you smell natural gas.”
