Discover Lassen County: Ishi the Last Yahi

Do you wonder about those who’ve walked this land before us or about the plants and animals who share our home? Lassen Land and Trails Trust invites you to join them for an adventure that will connect you with this place we call home.

On Saturday, October 22nd, the adventure is titled ‘Ishi, the Last Yahi’ and will be lead by Dr. Christopher O’Brien, Recreation and Heritage Staff Officer for the Lassen National Forest and Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at CSU Chico.

The rugged ‘front country’ of the Lassen National Forest is a desolate but beautiful landscape. It was the home of Ishi, the last Yahi, an extinct Northern California native people.

Ishi’s story has been told in both popular and scientific writing, and it is of particular significance that our adventure will occur during the 100th anniversary of Ishi’s walk out of the foothills of Mt. Lassen and into modern history.

Adventurers will learn about Ishi and the archaeology of our region, what we know or have heard as well as what we don’t know.

The day-long trip will allow you to immerse yourself in one of the last untouched areas of the world.

The Leader
Dr. Christopher O’Brien has been engaged in archaeological research for more than 25 years. A specialist in zooarchaeology, Dr. O’Brien has studied archaeological bone assemblages in North America, Europe, Central Asia and East Africa covering a span of two million years of human prehistory.

Dr. O’Brien is also Adjunct Faculty at Lassen Community College where he teaches Physical Anthropology and Archaeology.

Ishi, The Last Yahi will be presented Saturday, October 22nd, from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

Each ‘Discover Lassen County’ adventure includes refreshments, an expert guide and an unmatched experience! $15 per person or $10 for LLTT members.  For more information, call (530) 257-3252 or email [email protected]

Upon registration, a packet will be sent to each participant with directions, equipment and other requirements. Due to the rigors of Discover Lassen County, participation is limited to adults and children 12 years of age or older.
