Lassen National Forest Supervisor Nathan Rezeau signed a forest order closing several Eagle Lake Ranger District roads and trails impacted by the Whaleback Fire. This closure is based on the current and expected fire behavior and will be in effect until September 15, 2018, or until replaced or rescinded.
Crews and firefighters with heavy equipment and emergency vehicles are working in the active fire areas. For crew and public safety, Forest Order 06-18-02 identifies an area of the Eagle Lake Ranger District from approximately County Road 105 in the north to Merrill Flat Road in the south that is closed to public access. The forest order and accompanying map can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/lassen/alerts-notices .
“We coordinated with the incident command staff, firefighters and emergency response agencies and determined a closure area is the best means to protect the public,” Rezeau said. “We have installed signs and posted notices to alert the public about these temporary closures. We ask everyone to remain outside the closure area until it reopens.”
The Whaleback fire started July 27, 2018 on the Lassen National Forest and is managed under unified command between the Lassen National and CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit. Mandatory and advisory evacuations are still in place in several areas. For more information about the Whaleback Fire visit http://inciweb.nwcg.gov .
