A collision on Highway 395 near the Pozzolan plant road early Sunday morning proved deadly for a 37 year-old Reno resident after the vehicle he was driving crossed the double yellow line for an unknown reason and impacted a 2011 Freightliner head-on.
According to details released by the California Highway Patrol the accident occurred at around 5:40 Sunday morning as Fernley resident Jeffrey Smith, driving a 2011 Freightliner pulling a trailer with a commercial load, crested a hill driving northbound at around 57 mph. As Smith crested the hill he observed the 2001 Chevrolet coming towards him in a southerly direction. According to the report Smith realized as he got closer that the other vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic.
Smith attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision striking the Chevrolet head-on and killing the driver on impact.
After colliding with the Chevrolet the Freightliner continued in a northwesterly direction before overturning on a dirt embankment.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation and the identity of the driver who was killed is being held pending notification of his family.
