A structure fire early Friday morning did extensive damage to a single-story residence on South Fairfield Avenue, displacing a family of six and completely destroying an adjacent garage before firefighters could get the upper hand.
According to Susanville City Fire Captain Mark Ward the department responded to the 100 block of South Fairfield along with automatic-aid from the Susan River Fire Protection District and Cal Fire at around 3:47a.m., to find heavy fire coming from a fully involved garage, with fire extending into an adjacent residential structure.
Firefighters performed fire attack and ventilation operations and knocked down the fire. Salvage and overhaul operations were also performed.
“The garage and its contents were a total loss,” said Captain Ward, “The adjacent residential structure sustained extensive fire, heat and smoke damage.”
Ward said that a family of six were home at the time of the fire and safely exited the structure prior to the arrival of Susanville Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The response to the fire included two chief officers, two police units, five fire engines and one ladder truck. Agencies also assisting in the incident were Susanville Police Department, LMUD, the City of Susanville and Lassen OES.
