The Lassen County Environmental Education Collaborative, with support from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, are inviting youth and their families in 7th to 12th grades to participate in a sage grouse count at a lek near Skedaddle Mountain on the morning of April 8th. The event is a day-trip with students viewing grouse during the morning displays on their ancestral mating grounds.
What the heck is a lek?
A lek is a specific location where male sage grouse gather for the purpose of competitive breeding displays or dancing. These displays include the inflation of air-filled vocal sacs and the fanning of tail feathers.
Youth will collect data with guidance from CDFW wildlife biologist Brian Ehler, which will be reported to the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies for their annual count of sage grouse populations in our area.
