A SusanvilleStuff Feature

Sometimes it is not enough to read a book. The pleasure of finishing the story is extended when the book is shared with others who also read the author’s tale. Not only does the story linger, but sharing can also answer questions stirring in the reader’s minds.
That’s what led Jennifer Siemens to start The Susanville Book Club with the help of Sherry Williams, someone she didn’t actually meet until the first club meeting in January.
“I couldn’t find an existing book club in the area, and I had a real need to share what I was reading,” said Siemens, who is an avid reader. Her best friend Amber Brewer isn’t a huge reader, Siemens said laughing but “she will become one after she attends a few meetings.”
Williams, also a huge reader, helped Siemens set up a Facebook group page and before the January meeting there was 40 members. It is an open group that can suggest books to read and vote on the next selection.
The club meets the last Thursday of the month at different locations. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. and run about two hours. There is no age limit to who can join, but some books may not be appropriate for children, so the group moderators caution parents to check out chosen books.
In January the club discussed “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett and in February the club began discussing “The Hunger Games” trilogy, by Suzanne Collins. It will finish up the discussion in March.
After the monthly meeting, questions are posted on the Facebook site so those who were not able to attend the meeting can add to the discussion and those who want to further discuss the book may do so.
The club is very loose in format and though it encourages everyone to read the book discussed, it never turns away anyone who didn’t have time to read or couldn’t finish the book.
Siemens said there might be books chosen that a member will not want to read for whatever reason, but “we still want them to join us. We love books and can learn from each other and build new friendships.”
In March The Susanville Book Club is planning to meet twice. They are planning a movie night on the opening of “The Hunger Games – the movie,” which is releasing Friday, March 23rd.
The club will then meet at 6:00p.m., Tuesday, March 27th at a place still to be announced.
A vote is being monitored for the April book and so far the winner is “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen.
