Fierce Wind-Driven Wildfire Destroys Homes South of Reno

Fire crews and emergency personnel from Reno and Carson City are battling a fierce wind-driven brush fire threatening homes in the Washoe City area south of Reno along 395.

There is no official word on the size of the fire, however Reno television stations are now reporting that as many as half a dozen homes have burned in one neighborhood and immediate evacuations are underway in several areas close to the fire.

Heavy winds and low humidity prompted officials this morning the issue a Red Flag Warning statement, with fears running high in Reno that this might turn into a repeat of December’s blaze which destroyed homes in the Caughlin Ranch area.

The fire jumped highway 395 earlier this afternoon and the road is currently closed by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
