Fire Department Called to Pat Murphy Field for Late Night Vegetation Fire

A small vegetation fire, determined to be caused by transients known to camp in the area, was quickly extinguished Friday night by firefighters from the Susanville Fire Department, Cal-FIRE and Susan River Fire District.

The first crew was dispatched to the area of Pat Murphy Little League field at around 11:00, arriving to find a 20×30 spot burning behind 1625 Riverside Drive, next to the river.

“It was found that the cause of the fire was human-caused by transients,” explains Assistant Fire Chief Tom Hernandez. “Transients have been known to set up camp in the area.”

No injuries were reported among fire staff on scene, or any of the occupants from the homeless encampment.

Assistant Chief 601 responded along with one Cal-FIRE engine, one engine from Susan River FPD and the Susanville Police Department.
