The Susanville City Fire Department released the details surrounding two residential fires today; one on Russell Avenue that firefighters responded to late Friday afternoon, and another in a residential apartment complex on Alexander Avenue early Monday morning.
Russell Avenue
According to Captain Mark Ward the Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Susan River Fire Protection District and CalFire, were called to a structure fire, located in the 300 block of Russell Avenue in Susanville at around 4:30 Friday afternoon.
On arrival of the first-in engine company, light smoke was found coming from multiple windows of a single story, single family residential structure. Firefighters performed fire attack to knock down the fire. The extent of the fire resulted in damage to a single room and its contents. Captain Ward said that ventilation and overhaul operations were also performed.
The response to the fire included five fire engines and a ladder truck. The Susanville Police Department also assisted with the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Alexander Avenue
On Monday, November 3rd, at around 5:42 in the morning the Susanville Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Susan River Fire Protection District and CalFire responded to a reported structure fire in a multi-family residential apartment complex at 325 Alexander Avenue.
On arrival of the first-in engine company smoke was seen coming from the roof as well as inside the units on the first and second floor apartments.
“Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack,” explained Susanville Fire Captain Tom Hernandez. “Containment of the fire was at approximately 6:15a.m.”
One apartment and it’s contents sustained moderate damage according to Hernandez. The occupants on the first floor, where the origin of the fire was located, were displaced. The occupants escaped uninjured.
There was one injury to an occupant of another apartment when he removed the fire extinguisher from its case. The injury occurred when he broke the glass and removed the fire extinguisher.
After investigation into the cause of the fire it was determined to be electrical in nature. Salvage and overhaul operations were also performed.
Agencies also assisting in the incident were Susanville Police Department, LMUD, City of Susanville Public Works, Red Cross and Lassen County OES.
