A landmark piece of Susanville’s industrial history was reduced to ash early Sunday morning as a massive fire tore through the former Fruit Growers and Sierra Pacific Industries mill site on Riverside Drive.

The building, the last standing remnant of the once-sprawling mill complex, was the headquarters for Nobles Construction Components. The company, which specializes in prefabricated construction materials, has operated out of the facility since 2014.

A Rapidly Spreading Blaze
According to Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva, deputies arrived at the Riverside Drive property early this morning following reports of a fire. The situation escalated almost instantly; within minutes of the initial call, the massive structure was reported to be fully involved in flames.

Despite the intensity of the fire, officials confirmed there have been no reported injuries to civilians or first responders.

A Blow to Local History
For Susanville, the loss is more than economic. The mill site has long been a fixture of the skyline and a reminder of the region’s timber-driven roots.

“This is a hard loss for Susanville,” Sheriff McGarva said in a statement. “For many in our community, the old mill was more than just a landmark. It was part of the history and identity of this town.”

Community Response and Investigation
Multiple agencies converged on the scene in the early morning hours to contain the fire and protect the surrounding area, including fire personnel, law enforcement, public works and the Lassen Municipal Utility District.

As of Sunday morning, crews remain on-site to monitor hot spots. Residents are urged to exercise caution when traveling near Riverside Drive, as emergency vehicles and personnel continue to work in the area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. If you have any information regarding how the blaze may have started, please contact Lassen County Dispatch at 1.530.257.6121.
