Five people were injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 395 near Church Street in Janesville according to details released by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol.
Shortly before 6:00p.m., a woman, identified by the CHP as 19-year old Janesville resident Amanda Johnson, was driving a 1992 Chevy Blazer with four occupants east on Church street, intending to turn left onto the highway.
At the same time the driver of a 2015 Volvo, 43-year old Herlong resident Ann Layne, was driving her vehicle southbound on Highway 395 approaching the intersection of Church street at approximately 65mph.
Johnson brought her vehicle to a stop at the intersection of 395 and Church street, waited for an uninvolved vehicle to complete a left turn, and then attempted to make a left turn from Church Street onto the highway. According to CHP she failed to see the approaching Volvo.
Layne watched as Johnson entered the southbound lane directly into her course of travel. She applied a ‘hard braking application’ and turned the Volvo to the left in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the oncoming Blazer. The front of the Volvo collided with the left side of the Blazer and both vehicles came to rest blocking the northbound traffic lane and left-turn lanes.
As a result of the collision an unidentified minor passenger was fully ejected from the Blazer through the left rear window and came to rest approximately 18-feet east of the collision.
CHP, Milford fire, CAL-Fire and SEMSA ambulance all responded to the scene.
The minor passenger was transported from the scene by SEMSA air ambulance with major injuries to her head, neck and torso.
According to Public Information Officer Kristin Wilburn, all other involved vehicle occupants declined medical transport from the scene.
The CHP reminds drivers and passengers to use proper vehicle restraints while operating, or riding within, motor vehicles.
