With Independence Day upon us, the Lassen National Forest becomes a popular destination for recreational activities. Forest Service officials urge residents and forest visitors to keep wildfire prevention in mind, particularly during 4th of July celebrations.
Despite the fact that snow remains at higher elevations and stream and river flow is high, it takes only one out-of-control campfire or careless individual to ignite a wildfire.
Even following the wet spring, conditions are drying out quickly, according to fire officials. People need to take care when camping, cutting fuelwood and even driving in the forest.
Here are a few reminders that will help ensure you and your family will have an enjoyable holiday:
- All Lassen National Forest offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Forest offices will resume normal business hours on Thursday, July 5, 2018.
- Fireworks are not permitted on any National Forest lands. Please leave them at home. It is illegal to possess or use fireworks of any kind in the Lassen National Forest.
- During the holiday weekend, in the event of an emergency, residents, and visitors to the Forest – especially those around Lake Almanor – are asked to use landlines to call 9-1-1. The increased volume of cell phone users during holiday weekends strains rural telecommunication systems, sometimes creating problems when making a call. In the event of an emergency, using a landline is the best way to reach help.
- Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure your coals are cool to the touch before you leave it.
- Expect heavier vehicle traffic in and around the area. Drive defensively.
- Local recreation information, books, maps, guides and Forest souvenirs are available in the lobby of each ranger district office.
