Forrest “Butch” Sakamoto – May 13, 2026

Forrest “Butch” Sakamoto passed away on May 13, 2026, in Reno.

Butch was born on September 22, 1950. His parents, Sam and Yaeko Sakamoto, operated a family farm in Soquel, CA, where Butch learned early to work hard. Butch was taught to drive the tractor at age 5, and as he grew, so did his contributions to the farm.

After graduation from Soquel High School, Butch attended Cabrillo College, where he majored in oceanography. After 2 semesters, he took a break from school and was drafted into the Army.

Butch served during the Vietnam War, 1971 and 1972. He was stationed at the Sattahip Naval Base in Thailand. Butch was proud of his service and loving his country.

When he returned from service, Butch learned of the Lassen College Gunsmithing Program. He came to Susanville in 1976 (where he and Shirley first met) and graduated from the program in 1978.

Butch worked many jobs over the years, truck driver, heavy machinery operator, and he retired from High Desert State Prison. Gunsmithing was his love – His business card read “guns cussed and discussed”. Some of his closest friends were made over working on their firearms.

Butch loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and trap shooting with his friends. Butch was a proud lifetime member of Safari Club International and a benefactor member of the NRA. His last bull elk hunt in 2019 ended with a nice bull thanks to the help from some wonderful young men—one of his favorite memories.

Butch’s parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley. He leaves behind his son Seth, daughters Stephanie and Heather with Mark, and grandson Ferdinand, godson Michael and his family. Also his brother Donald, sister Daphne and beloved cousin Kenny & family.

Butch never met a stranger, and with that, he has friends across the country. Please share the word of his passing, and know that he loved you all.

Butch did not want a service; he wanted a party. To honor his wishes, we will celebrate his life on September 22, which would have been his 76th birthday. Location to be determined in Susanville.
