When local resident Charlene Norvell decided to leave work early on April 24th because her back was hurting she had no idea that only a few minutes later her new son, Asher Eli, would be born.
With the help of a fellow Sierra Army Depot employee, Asher Eli was born at 26 weeks weighing only 1 lb 14 oz in the parking lot of the Child Development Center at Sierra Army Depot where Norvell was picking up her 20-month old son, Landon.
With additional help from some wonderful employees, Norvell and the premature infant were cared for until Sierra Army Depot emergency response personnel arrived on scene, which proved to be life saving for both mother and baby.
Mountain Life Flight and REMSA took over care and transported the two to Renown Medical Center where Norvell was given a blood transfusion and stabilized. Baby Asher was admitted into the neonatal intensive-care unit where he remains.
To assist Charlene, Landon and Baby Asher an account has been setup at The Golden 1 Credit Union in Susanville under the name Baby Asher Fund account #1606134.
A fundraising car wash has been scheduled for May 17th at the Susanville Bowl Center from 11:00-2:00 p.m. and a spaghetti dinner has been scheduled for July 16th at the Diamond Mountain Casino.
