The residents of Westwood, Lassen County’s colorful little lumber town, celebrated their logging heritage with the annual Paul Bunyan Days Festival held on July 7th. The event is organized by the Westwood Area Chamber of Commerce and included a street dance, live blues acts, a logging competition, a 5k run and a parade.
The name of the festival comes from the giant woodsman Paul Bunyan who, along with his big blue ox Babe, roamed the Lassen forests around Westwood during the heyday of the Red River Lumber. Bunyan and the folk-tale legends from the forest became mascots for the lumber company.
