The Lassen County Veterans Association held their annual Memorial Day observances at cemeteries throughout the Susanville area on Monday, beginning with the historic Pioneer cemetery and ending at the Avenue of Flags in Johnstonville’s Diamond Crest cemetery.
American Legion Commander Hans Schindler led the observances which included an invocation and benediction by John Wilzcynski, remarks by VFW Commander Jim Dandois, Wendy Jacobs from the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary President Joyce Ewing, Blue Star Mom Becky Neely and Larry Rogers who was representing the Susanville Elks.
Barney McKee, in the personage of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, delivered a stirring presentation of the general’s farewell address given originally on the date that Lee surrendered and effectively ended the American civil war.
This year’s observances were outstanding and the number of people who attended are a testament to our community and its support for veterans and those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
