Third grade students from schools all over Lassen County came to town Friday for the Office of Education’s History Day.
The event, which ties into third grade curriculum in all of our local schools, helps teach the students history through character reenactments, exhibits and activities at locations throughout the historic uptown district.
Students met up with historic characters like Sheriff Jim Byers and Philenda Montgomery Spencer, they talked with town founder Isaac Roop and his daughter Susan on the steps of the old courthouse and listened as Gail Bengard and Edith Summers told stories of pioneer women in the Monticola Club.
After lunch on the lawn at Roop’s Fort the students went to the park to listen to live music, play old-time games and take a ride in an authentic wagon courtesy of the nice folks at Johnston Family Carriages.
