Did you know what career you wanted to pursue as a seventh grader? Most kids don’t. This why the Lassen Pathways in Education Attaining Knowledge and Skills (Lassen PEAKS) organized a career fair on October 12th, featuring representatives from several local businesses to talk about their careers and give the seventh graders in Lassen County exposure to several different career paths for the future.
The career fair was organized months in advance and featured career pathways in the areas of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Arts, Media, and Entertainment; Building Trades and Construction; Education Child Development and Family Services; Energy and Utilities; Engineering and Design; Fashion and Interior Design; Finance and Business Industry; Health and Science and Medical Technology; Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation; Information Technology; Manufacturing and Product Development; Marketing, Sales, and Services; Public Services; Transportation; and Entrepreneurship.
“Our goal is to begin introducing students to the many career options available before entering high school,” was stated in a letter sent by Lassen PEAKS to potential venders.
Local representatives who participated included, City of Susanville –Jared Hancock , Engineer – Camille Buehler, Susanville Indian Rancheria Corporation (SIRCO), Plumas Bank, Susanville Fire Department, SEMSA, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, Lassen Family Services, Banner Lassen Medical Center, Lassen Indian Health Center, Northeastern Rural Health Clinic, Lassen National Forest, Lassen County Farm Bureau, Cal Fire, Lassen Child and Family Services, Impact Construction, Customer Talk, ParaTransit Services, U.S.D.A. Wildlife Services, Frontier Communication, Plumas Sierra Rural Electric Coop, Honey Lake Power, CTAP Region 2, BLM – Eagle Lake Field Office/BLM – Wildlife Biologist and Lassen Trails and Trust.
Each representative shared, in a seven to ten-minute presentation, an overview of their careers, educational backgrounds, job requirements, training, and potential for career advancement. The event also featured keynote speakers Rich DuVarney, Chuck Downs, owner of Subway restaurant and Dr. Hall, Superintendent/President of Lassen College.
“I didn’t know some of these jobs are so well-paying,” sad Wyatt Spalding, seventh grader, Schaffer School following the event. “I know I either want to be a pilot or a rancher,” he said.
Lassen PEAKS’ continues to support strong leadership from our local schools to develop a college-going culture; the development of coherent instructional programs that include solid curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and a systematic system for students including early identification and support for students’ graduation plans.
