Despite the heat, the 2012 Susanville Quarter Horse Show brought in 300 entries and filled the Lassen County Fairgrounds with trucks, trailers, and prestigious horses.
The show drew competitors from all over the western states who travel the Quarter Horse Show circuit showcasing their horsemanship skills and working horses.
Horse Show Manager Dan Lindsey was pleased with the turn out and keeps the horse show coming back every year with help from his family and several other volunteers.
“The show brings revenue to the city of Susanville, people eat at our restaurants, stay at our hotels, and purchase items from our local businesses,” said Lindsey.
All around buckles are awarded for Open Amateur and Youth. A perpetual is trophy awarded by the Lindsey Family for the Senior Working Cow Horse.
For some riders, like Bill Finks, a local horse trainer, competing is a way to get your young horses exposure.
“The ground and the cattle were good, and it provided good exposure for my colt,” said Finks who stood out among the cutting horses riding Lights Madera owned by Keith Lockhart.
One of our local competitors Cory Shields placed first in the Amateur reining and Amateur working cow horse classes riding Boondocs Showgirl even after her stirrup came completely off while completing her reining pattern.
Other local exhibitors included Karen Gardella, Debbie Burns, and Cady Shroeder.
The Susanville Quarter Horse Show continues to grow and trainers like Bill Finks are pleased to have the opportunity so close to home.
“I was really impressed with how professionally run the show is,” said Finks. “We are fortunate that Dan Lindsey brought back this show.”
