Get Ready to See the Stars at Cedarville’s Dark Sky Fest

The annual Dark Sky Fest is returning to Cedarville, offering a day of celestial fun for the whole family on Saturday, September 13th. The free event, hosted by the Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Bureau of Land Management Applegate Field Office, invites people of all ages to learn about and appreciate the night sky.

The festival takes place just west of the Massacre Rim International Dark Sky Sanctuary, one of the darkest places on Earth. This unique location provides the perfect backdrop for attendees to witness a sky full of stars that can be difficult to see in more urban areas.

“The proliferation of artificial light has literally blinded us to a truly dark sky and what it reveals to us,” said Shaaron Netherton, Executive Director for Friends of Nevada Wilderness. “People are amazed by the sheer number of stars they can see and the awe-inspiring impact it has on them.”

Day-to-Night Activities
The festivities kick off with a Starry Skies Science Fair from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Country Hearth Restaurant garden. This daytime event will feature information on astronomy and the solar system, along with art projects and activities for all ages.

As evening approaches, the action moves to the Modoc County Fairgrounds for a Stargazing Party from 7:00p.m. to 11:00p.m. The Astronomical Society of Nevada and Star Chaserz Mobile Observatory will be on hand with telescopes and binoculars, allowing guests to view galaxies, nebulae, and other wonders of the deep sky. The evening will also include night sky trivia, storytelling, and programs on constellations and navigation.

The event will proceed rain or shine, or even if the skies are cloudy.

Explore the Sanctuary
For those looking for a more adventurous experience, the organizations also encourage visitors to explore the Massacre Rim International Dark Sky Sanctuary over the weekend. They advise those venturing into the backcountry to be prepared with a proper vehicle, a satellite communication device or a paper map, and plenty of water and snacks.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring a blanket or beach towel to lie back and enjoy the view.
