CalTrans District 2 has announced that the temporary detour on State Route 36 over Fredonyer Summit, is now open without any traffic controls. The project was in response to seismic activity that impacted the roadway and has kept the stretch of highway in near constant flux for several years.
CalTrans thanked both the contractor, Tullis, Inc and CalTrans crews for getting the new detour open, providing a stable, two-lane route before winter weather sets in.
Geological and survey investigations are ongoing to determine a long-term solution for the highway. The old section of the road is abandoned and closed to the public.
Eastbound speeds are limited to 20mph and westbound speeds are capped off at 25mph.
