The Lassen College Cougars’ 2026 spring baseball season is underway, entering the year with a program defined by the college as toughness, accountability and brotherhood. As Head Coach Frank Avilla enters his 16th year at the helm, the team is poised to compete at a high level, backed by a roster that blends seasoned experience with exciting new talent.

According to the college, the “Hustlin’ Cougars” are building on a foundation that grows stronger every year, with a focus on selfless ambition and collective responsibility.

A Powerful Sophomore Core
The heartbeat of this year’s squad is a battle-tested sophomore class that understands the grind of collegiate baseball.

Leading the offense are outfielders Damico Parker and Jack Zimmerman. Both are described as dynamic athletes who bring speed, consistency, and a commanding presence to the lineup.

The infield looks to be equally dangerous, anchored by the trio of Ethan Beede, Kylan Kono, and Roque Serrano—players who combine defensive reliability with the ability to produce runs. At first base, Jackson Rosenthal provides a cornerstone for the defense, bringing size, strength, and leadership to the corner.

On the mound, Lassen returns a pair of right-handed pitchers who offer stability and confidence. Kyson Goates and Noah Kimura are expected to be key competitive forces for the Cougars every time they take the ball.

New Talent and Fresh Arms
While the sophomores provide the backbone, a talented freshmen class is ready to make an immediate impact.

Newcomers to watch, according to Coach Avilla, include Easton Curtis, who adds versatility to the outfield, and Mason Montoya, who brings high energy and skill to the infield.

The pitching staff also gets a boost from the freshman class. Freeman Rountree adds valuable depth, while Trent Bailey offers a different look as a left-hander. Additionally, Caden Fowler arrives as a dual threat, contributing both as a right-handed pitcher and a first baseman.

Coaching Staff Additions
The 2026 season also marks significant additions to the coaching staff, strengthening the “Cougar tradition.”

Aaron Hassell joins the program as the new pitching coach. Arriving from Division 2 powerhouse Missouri Southern University, Hassell brings a player-first approach and fresh insight to developing the pitching staff.

The program is also welcoming back two of its own. Alumni Kyle Micklus and Kyle Norton have returned to coach, a move that Coach Avilla sees as vital for the team’s culture.

“Anytime quality men and alumni join the culture, it is special,” said Avilla. “The additions of Coach Hassell, Micklus, and Norton have been monumental in solidifying the foundation of our program.”

Looking Ahead
Coach Avilla believes the brotherhood and the program are in an exciting place.

“If we can become a team with real confidence, selfless ambition, and everyone committed to doing their job, we have a real chance to make another run,” Avilla said.

The Cougars’ next game will be on the road this Thursday, January 29th, against Solano College.

Local fans will get their first chance to see the 2026 squad in action at home on February 20th, when Lassen hosts College of the Redwoods.
